How close can you actually get to the vents? - Carrie Scheick, Grade 4

Dear Carrie,
Thanks for writing. Parts of Alvin like the manipulator arm actually get right in the very hottest waters of the vents which can reach temperatures of about 750 degrees Farenheit (hot enough to melt lead). We have to be very careful not to let the plexiglass windows of the sub touch
the hot water because the water could easily melt these windows and that would be disastrous for everyone inside.
