Title: Fishery Biologist 1 - North Pacific GOA Survey Biologist (19-1115) Location: Seattle, WA (98115) Anticipated Start Date: May 1, 2019 Position Type: Temporary (4 months or less), Hourly/Non-Exempt Benefits Eligible: No | www.psmfc.org/benefits Salary Target: $20.00/hour Job Number: 19-1115 How to Apply: Online at www.psmfc.org/careers Closing Date: April 19, 2019 at Midnight Group Definition: Fishery Biologists use professional knowledge and competence in the science of fishery biology to perform work: (a) developing, conserving, propagating, managing, and administering fishery resources; (b) evaluating the impact of construction projects and other socioeconomic activities that present potential or actual adverse effects on fishery resources and their habitats; and (c) producing and managing aquatic resources in their natural habitat and/or within facilities and systems that have been constructed for their benefit and public use. Position/Project Specifics: The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has established an intention to integrate electronic monitoring (EM) tools into the Observer Program for the fixed gear small-boat groundfish and halibut fisheries. The Council's intent is to develop EM to collect data to be used in catch estimation for this fleet. This research project, which will collect information that will help inform pre-implementation decisions and future Council alternatives for integrating electronic monitoring (EM) into the Observer Program. This position will collect hook-by-hook information aboard a chartered research vessel that has electronic monitoring (EM) installed for comparison between at-sea sample data and EM collected data. Analyses of these data will inform the efficacy of EM as a tool to collect species composition, length and effort data to inform catch estimation. ** This position requires a valid driver's license and all offers of employment will be contingent upon passing a driving record check. **
Requirements:
A range of education and experience may be presented. At the lower end of the range, candidates must present successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major in biological science with at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects and at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences. An equivalent combination of experience and education is also qualifying. At the upper end of the range, candidates must present one year of Specialized Experience** OR a year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. **Specialized Experience is experience that equips the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
