Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center, located in Newport Oregon, is seeking an Innovation Lab (iLab) Manager (Manager 1-R&D) to join the Director's team. An excellent candidate for this position would have broad experience with designing, testing and fabricating ocean technology - from the creation and programming of microcircuitry to the fabrication of pressure housings. The iLab Manager would interact and work closely with both technical and non-technical students, faculty, state and federal agencies, and industry partners to bring ideas from concept to completion. They would also have operational control over the iLab; responsible for safety, equipment maintenance, training, project scheduling, and consumables stocking. The Hatfield Marine Science Center has completed a multi-year campus expansion with the addition of the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building which houses the Hatfield iLab; a 3,500 square feet shop equipped with tools to support design, prototyping, and fabrication, including 3D printers, CNC machines, welders, electronics assembly and testing, mills, cutters and other fabrication equipment. The iLab is part of a network of OSU innovation spaces; each specializing and sharing expertise in different disciplines and collaborating to solve problems. The Hatfield Director's Office is a small functional team - while each member of the Director's team has their own duties and areas of expertise, the team holds collaboration and cooperation as their highest value. While we are looking for a person to join our team that has experience with the duties incumbent to the position, we are also focused on finding a person who is teams oriented, enjoys a variety of partnerships, is excited about change, and is willing to learn and grow. A strong candidate for this position would be able to demonstrate a history of teamwork, thoughtfulness, and collaboration.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant field of research focus Effective written and oral communications skills. 2 years' experience in fabricating, prototyping, and managing client projects. Demonstrated ability to solve a diversity of engineering projects from start to finish. 3D design experience in Inventor, AutoDesk, Solidworks, or similar. Experience in manufacturing and prototyping techniques such as 3d printing, laser cutting, CNC/manual machining, welding, casting, or similar. Experience in facilities and/or lab management. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the criminal history check requirement. Preferred (Special) Qualifications MS is mechanical or manufacturing engineering, marine science, oceanography, ocean engineering, or relevant experience in a related field. Two years of supervision responsibilities. Two years of facilities and/or lab management. Broad experience with: building, deploying, and/or repairing research instrumentation experience on a sea going research vessel video system engineering, videography, and/or photography experience electromechanical systems engineering and hardware-software integration environmental sensors, submersible and/or aerial vehicles such as drones, ROVs, gliders, drifters, or UAVs Demonstrated teaching and mentorship experience in science and/or engineering disciplines. Demonstrated ability to develop collaborations. Experience in applying for/success in grant funding. Experience in program development and management. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
