The School of the Coastal Environment at Coastal Carolina University is seeking qualified applicants for a Data Operations Specialist to support faculty and student research and education. The position will be part of a larger operations team, supporting field and laboratory applications across a range of instrumentation, software, and operational platforms. Coastal Carolina University (CCU) is rapidly expanding and building upon a historic emphasis on the marine sciences. We are seeking a new team member supporting faculty and student research and innovative educational applications of technology within coastal marine and wetland environments from diverse platforms (e.g., research vessels, small boats, drones, ROV's). The School of the Coastal Environment at Coastal Carolina University houses academic programs (B.S. in Maine Science, M.S. in Coastal Marine and Wetland Studies, and PhD in Marine Science-Coastal and Marine Systems Science) as well as the Burroughs and Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies research center. The B&C Center is active in coastal geoscience and processes, coastal observations-modeling-applications-technology, wind energy and houses the Environmental Quality Lab and Waccamaw Watershed Academy. The program maintains the 54-foot R/V Coastal Explorer, as well as an array of smaller vessels and the Anne Tilghman Boyce Coastal Reserve, an undeveloped complex of ocean frontage, fresh and saltwater marshes, tidal creeks, and upland woods on Waites Island supporting teaching and research. This position will have primary responsibilities of: 1. Preparation, operation, and maintenance of a wide range of environmental instrumentation and associated software (e.g., geophysical, water quality, hydrodynamic, video, drones, ROV and data management). This includes support of near-real time telemetry systems for in situ sensing at coastal sites. 2. Overseeing data processing, database management, and QA/QC with emphasis on facilitating broad access and use of spatial datasets in GIS format (ARCPRO). Facilitate faculty, student, and class access and use of long-term School databases and GIS applications (e.g., Waites Island, Smart Reef, EQL, Winyah Bay and other long-term course and program data sets). 3. Coordinating scheduling, instrumentation set up, and operations across the broader operations team (boat captains), faculty, students, and technicians. 4. Participate as part of instructional team with faculty for field and technology methods and applications teaching labs and courses.
Requirements:
Requirements: A bachelor's degree in Marine Science, Geoscience, Computer Science or a related field is required.Experience in acquiring, processing and managing large marine, geophysical, meteorological and environmental quality datasets and experience with a range of oceanographic data acquisition and processing software (e.g. Hypack, SonarWiz, Matlab, ArcPro, in situ real time reporting systems, etc.) are required. Experience operating small boats preferred. A master's degree in Marine Science, Geoscience, Computer Science or a related field is preferred. FAA Part 107 sUAS drone pilot license required upon hiring or within 3 months of starting in the position.
