Marine Conservation Science Fellow
URL: https://farallones.org/conservation-science-fellow/
Company / Organization: Greater Farallones Association
Pay Rate: $25/hour
Type: Part-time
City: San Francisco, CA
Application Deadline: 01-Jun-22
Duration: 2-3 Months
Description:
This project will focus on measuring restoration success using Pacific Mole Crab (Emerita analoga) and coastal bird abundance and diversity at Ocean Beach. Pacific mole crabs are one of the most important and abundant macroinvertebrates on exposed beaches of California. They are also a vital part of the sandy beach food web and are important prey for birds, mammals, and fishes, including threatened species such as the Western Snowy Plover. Coastal birds, including Surf Scoters and shorebirds, are top predators that utilize California sandy beach and surf zone habitat for foraging. Shorebirds have been identified as strong indicators of invertebrate biomass. GFA has drafted a recommended monitoring plan for sandy beach habitat using mole crab and shorebirds as indicators of a restored ecosystem. The Fellow will test this restoration monitoring plan using the invertebrate/shorebird monitoring data to inform changes in the sandy beach ecosystem, which is required for restoration projects; test hypotheses, inform limitations in possibilities for future monitoring plans, and provide recommendations for monitoring; and have the opportunity to present the outcome at a scientific conference. This is a part-time temporary position with the Greater Farallones Association and requires a commitment of 30-40 hours per week from July to August 2022 with possible extension into September. Working hours will be arranged with the candidate's schedule in consideration. This position may be in person or remote. Funded by the Goodman Grant, the GFA Marine Conservation Science Fellowship seeks to prioritize Black, Indigenous, People of Color, allies, and candidates underrepresented in the marine science field.
Requirements:
Statistical modeling skills required; experience conducting power analysis encouraged. Experience managing and manipulating data in software packages such as Excel, Access, R, Matlab, or similar programs.
