Are you drawn to coastal communities with a collaborative spirit? Look no further, we've got an opening for a Communications and Engagement Project Leader position. We're looking for a person who can: • lead strategic communications and outreach planning • implement communications and outreach • serve as community liaison for the marine reserves program This person is a member of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's marine reserves program. The program is a six person, interdisciplinary team responsible for overseeing the management and scientific monitoring of Oregon's five marine reserve sites. Scientific research, outreach, and community engagement are key mandates set by the State Legislature for Oregon's marine reserves. The Governor's Office, Legislature, and constituents have significant expectations about the successful implementation of this work. This person is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications and outreach for the marine reserves program that targets stakeholders, partners, decision makers, and the general public. Communications and outreach are to raise awareness of: a) Oregon's marine reserve sites, b) ODFW's marine reserves program, c) the science of marine reserves, d) the scientific research being conducted by ODFW and research partners, and e) Oregon's nearshore ocean and estuarine ecosystems. This work requires close collaboration and coordination with the marine reserves program leader, ODFW Marine Program leadership team, scientific research staff, and partners. This person also serves as a community liaison for the marine reserves program, working within coastal communities and with communities of interest. This includes working with the marine reserves program leader to develop mechanisms for: a) supporting community-based activities related to marine reserves implementation, and b) supporting sustainable, long-term engagement of coastal communities in the stewardship of Oregon's marine resources.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or marine program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or marine program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Marine Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or Marine program. A Master's degree in Fisheries or Marine Science or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience. A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Marine Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience. Requested Skills: • Experience in communications, in a natural resources field, is required. • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills are required. • A basic knowledge of marine science and natural resource social sciences (human dimensions) is needed. • Application must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with diverse constituencies.
