Description:
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences seeks applicants for a full-time position as an Equipment Technician for the Department of Marine Sciences (DMS). Under the supervision of an operations manager, the Equipment Technician will maintain scientific, electronic, and mechanical equipment and instruments, including flowing seawater systems, to support the specialized research and teaching activities of the Department. The Equipment Technician is expected to work independently and within the defined guidelines established by the program and the supervisor. 1. Assist with oversight of the daily operations of DMS research facilities and equipment including but not limited to the Rankin Seawater facility, small boats, trucks, trailers, and other mechanical equipment to facilitate the research activities of students, staff, and faculty. 2. Consult with students, staff, and faculty regarding research, teaching, and operational needs within the Rankin Seawater laboratory and other operational areas of the Department. 3. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on research equipment owned by DMS including those used in the laboratory and field. 4. Instruct others in the proper and safe use of scientific equipment and instruments. 5. Help with the rigging of moored arrays, sensors, and other equipment and help with their deployment in the field from small boats and research vessels. 6. Duties require occasional work on off hours including weekends and holidays, and occasional work offsite including onboard boats. 7. Perform related work as assigned and/or required.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree and equivalent experience in a marine-related field; Two to three years of related experience; Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; Demonstrated experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of seawater plumbing and standard scientific and electronic instruments and equipment; Experience working in a science laboratory and in the marine environment; Experience working with standard software applications; Open water SCUBA certification or higher certification (e.g., AAUS) or willingness to obtain such certifications; CT Safe Boating Certificate or willingness to obtain such certification. Additional preference will be given to individuals who hold a US Coast Guard Master's License; Experience with vessel systems and engine maintenance/repairs; Ability to work independently to analyze available information, draw conclusions and understandings, and present such conclusions effectively to senior management; Ability to work with diverse student, staff, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
