Description:
The Penikese Island School (www.penikese.org) seeks 5 enthusiastic summer staff members for our 2023 Girls Science + Nature Camp season. The goal of this program is to build the confidence of middle-school girls in the sciences by providing them with role models of women in STEM. Each 5-day/4-night session is focused on STEAM activities and outdoor educational programming for 12 middle school-aged girls (entering 7th and 8th grade). The cornerstone of this experience is the opportunity to engage with female scientists from nearby, world-renowned Woods Hole scientific institutions. Our focus is on science, art, and outdoor education through the lens of a unique island environment and its wildlife. Camp sessions run from July 3 - August 4, on the remote island of Penikese, located 15 miles off Cape Cod. Pre-camp orientation week is June 26-30. More about our program here: https://www.penikese.org/camp These are full-time, temporary positions [June 26, 2023 - August 4, 2023]. ISLAND STEWARDS x2 ($1500/wk) The Island Stewards will oversee the daily operations of island life and serve as support for camp -- preparing all meals and snacks, overseeing the facilities and systems, and managing the housekeeping tasks and chores. The Island Stewards will serve as mentors and role models for campers as well as for the three Counselors. Together with the Counselors, Stewards have an integral role in monitoring the wellbeing of campers. We seek two Island Stewards who are fun, creative, and energetic, with a passion for the outdoors and for youth education/development. Our ideal candidates will have experience with camping, sailing, or other outdoor programs of a residential and rustic nature and be excited by "living off the grid". Previous experience preparing meals for a group is highly desirable. Previous experience with middle-school aged youth is highly desirable. Lifeguard certification and Wilderness First Aid certification are highly desirable. A pair of applicants that know each other well would be welcome! CAMP COUNSELORS x3 ($800-900/wk) Camp Counselors serve as role models for campers. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Camp Counselors will assist visiting guest scientists and artists with their activities. Counselors will run additional science, art, and recreational activities on Wednesdays and Fridays. Successful applicants are fun, creative, and energetic, with a proven interest in youth education, STEAM programming, and a strong desire to help empower middle-school girls in the sciences. Ideal applicants are working towards completing or have completed a degree in the sciences (biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, math) or in education. Lifeguard certification and Wilderness First Aid certification are highly desirable. Questions? Contact Kimberly at kulmer@penikese.org
