Description:
The Marine Sciences Consortium (MESC) Scientific Diving Program is maintained at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL). The Diving Safety Officer (DSO) maintains oversight and operational control of all scientific and research diving support as well as operation supervision for all diving programs. The DSO conducts diver training including AAUS Certification, conducts other diver support, maintains dive records, maintains and repairs dive equipment, and teaches first aid, CPR, and other safety related programs as needed. The DSO is a member of the MESC Diving Control Board. The DSO is also a member of Marine Technical Support at DISL and assists with other research support including operation of small vessels, serving as deckhand for larger vessels, assisting with research, and serving on the laboratory safety committee.
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree (MS preferred) in marine or related science and five years of experience as a certified diving instructor, including scientific diving experience; or a combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Requirements/Certifications Certification as a diving instructor by a nationally recognized diving agency (e.g.,NAUI, PADI, SDI) PSI/PCI visual cylinder inspector certification AAUS Diving Certification and experience implementing Scientific Diving Program Current DAN (Divers Alert Network) Diving First Aid for Professional Divers Instructors, or ability to obtain and maintain AL boating license MOCC or similar vessel operator certification Certified Scuba diving repair technician for ScubaPro, preferred ##Physical Abilities: Frequently stand/walk, seated, performs based computer tasks Ability to work days, availability on nights, weekends and holidays. Physical fitness to frequently dive and swim Frequently operates heavy equipment using foot and hand controls to drive large vehicles (such as trucks, boats, and trailers)
