Description:
The Executive Director of the Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) will sustain the mission of the Lab and bring new vision that builds on its long and successful history. This individual will provide leadership in the following areas: successful grantsmanship and development experience, establishing partnerships and/or cooperative agreements with foundations or other organizations, and provide responsible oversight of academic and public programs, finances, and facilities. Advocacy, Communications, and Outreach: Lead an inter-organizational team that spans Cornell University, the University of New Hampshire, and other institutions of higher education involved with SML; serve as a point of contact for local, state, and national agencies in the area of marine laboratory operations; facilitate outreach to local and broader marine and coastal communities; and serve as advocate for the SML on the UNH and Cornell campuses. Leadership and Strategic Planning: Provide leadership to increase the research and educational capacity of the SML; identify and explore important initiatives to expand or improve integrative, interdisciplinary marine science education and research at UNH and Cornell. Financial Resources Development: Secure and maintain relationships with key SML donors; solicit major gifts alongside University Advancement teams; develop actionable fundraising plans; seek and secure grant funding to support SML activities. Academic Administration: Oversee efforts to recruit students for SML programs, as well as enrollment and financial aid processes. Ensure the continued success of SML's academic programs with a focus towards student recruitment and supporting the academic needs of our parent institutions (UNH and Cornell). Identify new curricular opportunities for SML. Administrative and Human Resources Management: Manage the SML, including supervision of SML staff and administration of the SML budget. Facilities Management: Provide administrative oversight for marine science facilities (Shoals Marine Lab, the R/V Kingsbury, small boats, permits,etc.); oversee and coordinate space use at the SML, and in coordination with UNH, the Judd Gregg Marine Complex. Application review will begin August 7th, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.
Requirements:
Master's degree in marine science or related field. Five years of experience in a position with commensurate responsibilities. Proven leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to operationalize a vision. Two years of supervisory experience. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with a variety of organizations and individuals. Proven successful administrative and budgetary experience. Record of success in securing extramural funding from private and/or public sources. Experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Additional Preferred Qualifications Doctorate degree in marine science or related field preferred. Experience with teaching and research in a remote field station. Project management experience. Successful experience with organizational transformation.
