Description:
Coastal Studies for Girls is a residential science and leadership semester school for tenth
grade girls in Freeport, Maine. Resident/Teaching Assistant internships at CSG offer college
students and recent college graduates leadership opportunities and learning experiences in a
supportive, all girls residential community.
Our Fall Term RA/TA positions run from the third week in August through the third week in
December, while our Spring Term positions run from the first week in February through the
first week in June. Applications for our fall semester positions are due March 15,2016 and
applications for our spring semester positions are due October 15, 2016. All positions are
open until filled, so we encourage you to inquire after these deadlines have passed to see
if our positions have been filled.
Compensation
• Stipend and full room and board at the Coastal Studies for Girls’ campus in Freeport,
Maine for a full semester.
• Academic support/supervision if the candidate is seeking to earn academic credit for
the internship as part of an undergraduate degree program.
You’ll have the opportunity to live and work in a residential community while practicing
community building, leadership, experiential education, and educational support skills.
Living on the beautiful Maine coast, you’ll participate in field trips to explore the state. We’ll
have you out camping, hiking, snowshoeing, conducting marine science field research, and
visiting important cultural and educational institutions. We welcome applicants with a wide
variety of specialty areas, including but not limited to Science, leadership, women’s studies,
English, history, mathematics, French and Spanish.
Requirements:
JOB STANDARDS
• An understanding of and dedication to the mission of Coastal Studies for Girls
• Strong female role modeling necessary for daily interaction with 15 and 16 year old
girls.
• Current enrollment in, or graduate of, a BA or BS Degree from an accredited college or
university. Specialty areas can be science, leadership, women’s studies, English,
history, mathematics, French, Spanish, or other fields related to the CSG curriculum
• Solid written and oral communication skills
• Experience with high school students
• A desire to live and work with tenth grade girls in the CSG 24/7 residential community
• Skills and background in the outdoor environment
• Certified in First Aid/CPR
• 21 or older
• Valid driver’s license with good driving record
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Act as a positive role model for students
• Engage positively with the CSG community
• Responsibilities are split approximately 70% Residential Living focus, 30% Teaching
Assistant focus
• Supervise students during non-class hours, including evenings and weekends
• Provide one-on-one mentorship for students
• Plan and lead extra-curricular activities during non-class hours
• Provide faculty support as a Teaching Assistant during academic classes and field trips.
• Provide academic support and tutor students during study hall periods.
• Provide logistical support for field trips (managing food, supplies, and equipment)
• Assist Head Resident with all residential life activities, campus policies, and following
and enforcing the Community Agreement
• Provide food service assistance on a rotating basis.
Work Commitment
• 18 week minimum commitment (student semester plus pre-term orientation/planning
and post-term cleanup and evaluation)
• Time off daily and weekly to be negotiated
