This position will provide interns with training and Work Experience in the area of Environmental Education, Interpretation and Community Education.
Interns will be exposed to both an Oregon State office and a protected reserve environment
with a host of learning opportunities ranging from local outdoor and marine science to
public and office communications. Environmental Education interns will work alongside
seasoned education professionals, scientists and researchers and receive focused training
and gain work experience in the areas of:
-Preparing lesson plans, setting up and delivering hands-on science-based educational
programs to both children and adults.
- Natural history, botany, forestry, horticulture, estuaries and wetlands
-Scientific research
Requirements:
Environmental Education Assistant :
Environmental Education: Assist in the development and delivery of familyoriented, outdoor, educational activities and programs.
Program Facilitation: Answer visitor questions, assist with program enrollment and sign-in, lead segments of program and collect fees/donations.
Program Support: Answer phones and visitor questions, make copies, prepare and sometimes laminate activity projects for programs, and assist staff members as needed.
This position is ideal for a person who is interested in teaching and enjoys the outdoors. Interns should also: Enjoy working with adults and children Be comfortable interacting with individuals and groups of people Have some knowledge of the natural resources/science and a willingness to learn Read and write at above an 8th grade level.
Time Commitment
6 weeks @ 15 hours/week plus training for a total of 100 hours with housing (if you live more than 50 miles outside of the Coos Bay area) Stipend Award: $500.00 Begin week of September 27, end week of November 1

Evaluation
Interns will be mentored by either South Slough’s Education Program Coordinator or South Slough’s Education Program Specialist. S/he will provide formal feedback to the intern on a weekly basis and less formally on an as needed basis. This is an informal relationship that allows the student to ask questions and the mentor to make suggestions. A final verbal and written evaluation will be conducted by the intern’s mentor and other staff and volunteers who have worked with the intern.
