The Prince William Sound Science Center is a research and education focused community benefit organization. We strive to advance the understanding and sustainable use of ecosystems through relevant scientific research and hands-on, STEAM-based education. The Science Center’s environmental science summer camps are an opportunity for campers to experience the amazing landscape that surrounds us in an educational and exciting way. Through camp experiences, we’ll hike in the rainforest, observe glaciers up close, canoe through the wetlands, and explore the tide pools and ocean. We are dedicated to helping campers develop their understanding of the world and themselves through scientific inquiry, positive outdoor experiences, leadership development, and ecosystem stewardship.

Requirements:

Description: The Environmental Education intern will work closely with education staff to lead and develop camp activities and hands-on, feet-wet camp curriculum; participate in all camp sessions as a group leader; and assist with logistical facilitation of camp and community activities. Interns will also be given the opportunity to assist with ongoing research at PWSSC when it does not conflict with educational activities. Learning objectives can be based on intern’s interests and strengths but should include familiarization with coastal Alaskan ecosystems and environmental education best practices.

Intern qualifications: Coursework and a strong interest in biology, ecology, marine biology, or a related field; experience working in a camp setting or a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a broad audience; desire to work with people, particularly youth; dependable and self-motivated; strong organizational skills; flexible; friendly and patient; willingness to work evenings and weekends; basic outdoor skills; First Aid/CPR certified or willing to obtain certification; and an ability to cheerfully live and lead programs in a remote location under challenging conditions including cold, rain, wind, and in proximity to large mammals (bears and moose). Bear safety training/experience is an asset; a bear-safety refresher will be provided. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
