What: The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is pleased to offer two unpaid internships for the 2019 season. Interns will learn by actively assisting our staff and AmeriCorps Team in a variety of programs and tasks focusing on exhibit interpretation, visitor engagement, citizen science, and summer camp education. Other aspects of life in a busy non-profit educational organization will be explored as opportunities arise. Interns are responsible for completing any paperwork necessary to receive university credit, if desired. Where: PTMSC is a public non-profit marine education facility located in Fort Worden State Park, Washington. Our two buildings house a small hands-on aquarium with local nearshore invertebrates and fish and a citizen science research lab, as well as a museum building featuring a fully articulated orca skeleton with exhibits connecting her to emergent issues of toxics in the marine environment, and two fully equipped classrooms. When: Preferred: Two 20-week positions available beginning June 17th, 2019 until October 31st, 2019 Option: If unable to commit through October, position is flexible to end on Labor Day Positions are full-time, including most weekends. Tasks: 50% - Serve as lead in the daily operations of exhibits including opening and closing tasks, and assist the volunteer docent team in interpreting Marine and Natural History exhibits for visitors 20% - Assist staff in maintaining Aquarium and Museum Exhibits. Tasks include cleaning exhibits and tanks, caring for animals, maintaining seawater supply systems, and general upkeep of exhibits. 15% - Assist educational staff/AmeriCorps team with Marine Science Summer Camps (June-August only) and with other education programs for scheduled groups (June- October) 10% - Assist program staff with Visitor Engagement Evaluations and visitor data tracking activities. 5% - Support volunteers with other activities such as Citizen Science projects, monitoring the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and helping in the PTMSC Gift Shop.
Requirements:
Qualifications: Ability or willingness to work with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds Marine science and/or natural history background Energetic, self-motivated, and willing to learn Independent, well organized, and a team worker Excellent verbal communication skills CPR and First Aid certification completed before arrival Physical Demands: The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this internship. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Ability to walk on uneven terrain for up to 2 miles carrying up to 30 pounds Ability to lift 40 pounds from the floor Ability to work in tight and awkward spaces Ability to work above the water using a safety harness Ability to climb and work from ladders and stairs Ability to reach, lift and move 20 pounds from shoulder height Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions Stipend: Full internship through October receives $2,000 total living stipend, paid twice per month. Housing Arrangements: If needed PTSMC will be able to provide housing for the duration of the internship either as a private room in a home or in a camping trailer at Fort Worden.
