The Marine Studies Department at the Canterbury School of Florida is seeking a Marine Science Education Intern for the Summer of 2022. The Marine Science Education Intern will assist with various Marine Science Summer Camps for students in grade K through Grade 7. The intern will lead students and campers in interactive hands-on learning experiences with touch tanks, snorkeling, outdoor exploration, kayaking, games and arts and crafts. The intern will also assist with field trips to venues including local beaches and nature preserves. The intern will help develop marine studies curriculum for students in K through Grade 7. The curriculum will focus on all aspects of marine science and environmental education. Additionally, the intern will help maintain and care for the classroom, lab space and learning resources in the Cousteau Center for Marine Studies (CCMS). The Marine Studies program features a kayak fleet, paddle boards, 23-foot Sea-Pro bay boat, and three aquarium touch tanks filled with various organisms like reef fish, crabs, sea stars, urchins and sea snails. The mission of the Marine Studies Department is to inspire an appreciation of the local marine environment and to promote responsible stewardship. The program aims to accomplish these goals by enhancing traditional science curriculum and focusing on inquiry-based marine science education. The Marine Studies Environmental Education Internship at Canterbury School of Florida will provide the potential intern with practical learning experience and knowledge of informal conservation and environmental education in a summer camp setting. Interns will work around 40 hours per week Monday-Friday for 4 weeks during summer camp sessions (6/13-6/17, 6/20-24, 7/11-15, 7/18-22) and around 5-15 hours per week the other internship weeks. This internship will run from Monday, May 30th to Friday, August 12th , unless otherwise arranged by the Director of Marine Studies.

Requirements:

Qualifications: 1. Undergraduate/graduate student or recent graduate majoring in marine science, environmental science, biology, or similar field with a valid drivers license and automotive insurance. 2. Demonstrates interest in working with children and animals. Willingness to work with students in grades K through Grade 7. 3.Exhibits a positive attitude, is hard-working, and passionate about educating students about the marine environment. Capable of working independently and able to solve a wide variety of problems in the field. 4. A driver's license is required as is proof of health insurance. 5. Any previous education experience, boating experience, kayaking experience, lifeguard/CPR certification, and experience driving 15 passenger van is appreciated. 6. Background Check, which includes fingerprinting, will be required, but paid for by Canterbury School of Florida. 7. Must be willing and able to work with children of varying ages, as well as adults, in a professional manner. 8. Must be able to take and follow directions to maintain a safe work environment for staff, students, and the animals at Canterbury School of Florida. 9. Must be able to perform physical challenges involved in the daily duties including talking for long periods, walking, lifting/carrying equipment weighing approximately 30-50 lbs., sitting, kneeling, and bending. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions. 10. Interns must be able to commit to working around 40 hours per week Monday-Friday for 4 weeks during summer camp sessions (6/13-6/17, 6/20-24, 7/11-15, 7/18-22) and around 5-15 hours per week the other internship weeks. This internship will run from Monday, May 30th to Friday, August 12th , unless otherwise arranged by the Director of Marine Studies with a paid stipend of $1,500.
